Description
Overview
The T-RackS EQ 73 is a professional audio plug-in from the acclaimed T-RackS mixing and mastering suite by IK Multimedia. This module is a “true to the original” reproduction of one of the most renowned and sought-after pieces of hardware in music recording history. Originally part of a large-format British mixing console and later introduced as a standalone rackmount module in 1970, the EQ 73 is legendary for its thick, Class-A sound, rich harmonics, and sonic fullness.
Unlike standard emulations, the EQ 73 utilizes innovative modeling technologies to capture the complex interaction between the preamp and the EQ. By recreating the gain stages, circuit designs, and specific EQ curves, IK Multimedia provides a digital tool that delivers the authentic warmth and “grit” of the original analog hardware.
Key Details
- Class-A Discrete Modeling: Captures the thick, harmonic-rich sound of the original British hardware for added warmth and depth.
- Integrated Preamp Section: Beyond simple equalization, the preamp can be pushed to add saturation, grit, and distortion to a wider sonic palette.
- Colorful 3-Band EQ: A versatile equalizer designed to add character to sterile digital tracks, allowing for musical boosts without harshness.
- Authentic Interaction: Specifically models the preamp/EQ interaction, ensuring the saturation and tone-shaping behave exactly like the physical unit.
- Precision Sculpting: Features a dedicated “presence” band for body sculpting, alongside high-end air and low-end punch controls.
Use Cases
- Drum Processing: Add punch to kick drums and snap to snares, or bring out the shimmer in overheads.
- Vocal Enhancement: Use the presence band to carve out the body of a vocal and the high-shelf for professional “air.”
- Bass and Guitars: Impart classic British warmth and harmonic saturation to bass lines and electric guitars.
- Digital Warmth: Apply to “cold” or sterile digital recordings to introduce analog-style harmonics and fullness.
