Description
Overview
The Qanun Crossgrade by EngineAudio is a specialized software upgrade designed for users who already own the Arabic Oud / E-Oud library. This crossgrade provides access to the Qanun, a characteristic Oriental plucked string instrument that has been a cornerstone of Middle Eastern musical traditions for over a millennium. This delicate wooden psaltery, featuring between 63 and 84 strings, is meticulously sampled to bring authentic Oriental textures into the modern digital studio.
Developed in collaboration with Syrian multi-instrumentalist Bassam Ayoub, the library focuses on translating the complex playing techniques and emotional expression of the physical instrument into a playable virtual format. By combining high-resolution sampling with an intuitive interface, the Qanun bridges the gap between traditional Maqam music and contemporary production.
Key Details
- Authentic Sampling: Features 22 distinct articulations, multiple velocity layers, and up to 16 round robins to eliminate the “machine-gun effect” and preserve natural character.
- Expressive Control: Articulations are split between performed and freely playable variants, allowing for both precision and creative flexibility.
- Microtuning Integration: Includes integrated microtunings essential for the Maqam tradition, with a wide selection of oriental and historical tunings available in two variants with selectable root notes.
- Performance Workflow: Utilizes keyswitches for seamless real-time switching between playing styles, featuring both Latch (stays active) and Hold (active while held) modes.
- Creative Aids: Integrated MIDI song keys provide short phrases that demonstrate the instrument’s sonic versatility and inspire composition.
- Engine Player Interface: Runs within the modern, clean Engine Player environment for a distraction-free workflow.
Use Cases
- Traditional Composition: Creating authentic Middle Eastern arrangements and classical Maqam-based music.
- Film Scoring: Adding cultural depth, tension, or exotic atmosphere to cinematic soundtracks and world-music cues.
- Modern Production: Integrating organic, plucked textures into EDM, Hip-Hop, and Pop productions for a unique sonic signature.
- Sound Design: Utilizing the complex harmonic profile of the psaltery for experimental textures and layering.
