Description
Overview
The Optigan Plugin by DSP-BRICKS is a faithful digital emulation of the legendary 1970s “Optical Organ.” This extraordinary instrument bypassed conventional synthesis in favor of interchangeable optical programme discs, creating a unique sound reproduction system that functioned as a precursor to the modern DAW. By recreating this specific technology, the plugin delivers the unmistakable, scratchy, lo-fi character and “audible patina” that define the original hardware.
This plugin preserves the original playing concept, combining a melody keyboard with chord and rhythm keys to allow for complex, vintage arrangements. It provides an extensive library of sounds, including 40 original programme discs and three unofficial prototype discs, offering everything from organs, pianos, and guitars to full rhythmic accompaniments and rare special effects.
Key Details
- Authentic Lo-Fi Character: Specifically designed to retain the original’s scratchy, vintage texture without cleaning up the audio, ensuring a genuine 1970s aesthetic.
- Massive Sound Library: Includes a comprehensive collection of 43 discs in total, covering styles such as Bossa Nova, Big Band, and various instrumental combos.
- Complex Arrangement Tools: Replicates the original workflow of combining melody, chords, and rhythms for full-band arrangements within a single interface.
- Diverse Sonic Palette: Access a wide array of vintage sounds including strings, wind instruments, guitars, and unusual rhythmic loops.
Use Cases
- Vintage Production: Perfect for producers seeking authentic 1970s textures, “hauntology” sounds, or lo-fi aesthetics for indie, electronic, or cinematic scores.
- Quick Arrangement Sketching: Use the built-in rhythmic accompaniments and chord patterns to quickly build a foundation for a track, similar to an early version of GarageBand.
- Sound Design: Utilize the unusual special effects and prototype discs to create unique, non-traditional sonic layers that stand out from modern clean samples.
