Description
Overview
Metric Halo Character v4 is a professional saturation plug-in designed to infuse your digital tracks with the luscious, “gooey” distortion characteristics of classic analog circuitry. Rather than using generic approximations, Metric Halo developed Character by using SpectraFoo to precisely measure the harmonic behavior of favorite analog hardware—including mic pres, DIs, and EQs—provided by top-tier tracking, mixing, and mastering engineers.
By leveraging proprietary +DSP technology, Character delivers the euphonic warmth of tubes, transformers, and solid-state devices without the typical drawbacks of analog gear. The result is a noiseless, phase-coherent non-linear distortion that adds weight, grit, and harmonic richness to any source.
Key Details
- 24 Analog Models: A comprehensive library of models incorporating the sonic signatures of tubes, transformers, and solid-state hardware.
- Advanced Anti-Aliasing: Oversampled and antialiased processing ensures high-fidelity, euphonic distortion without digital artifacts.
- Flexible Drive Controls: Use the Manual Drive control to push the signal for aggressive mangling, or engage Autodrive to maintain consistent distortion levels regardless of the input signal.
- Precision Leveling: Integrated Output Gain allows for perfect level matching between the dry and processed signals.
- Modern Workflow: Features an adjustable UI size for different screen resolutions and the MH Preset Manager for seamless cross-platform preset sharing.
- v4 Enhancements: This version introduces additional oversampling options, a new UI for VST3, and native Apple Silicon support for VST hosts (including Steinberg products).
Use Cases
- Vocal & Instrument Warmth: Apply “Classic British” or tube models to vocals and guitars to achieve a saturated, “analog desk” tone.
- Percussion Grit: Add aggressive harmonic distortion to drums or percussion riffs to help them cut through a dense mix.
- Mastering Saturation: Use subtle saturation to glue a mix together and add harmonic complexity without introducing noise or phase shift.
- Sound Design: Push the Drive control to extremes for creative sound mangling and industrial textures.
