El Jaguar is a vibrant sonic journey into the heart of Barranquilla’s underground music culture, capturing the raw energy of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. This virtual instrument is built upon the concept of “Sonic Monuments,” utilizing the iconic Picó sound systems—towering, hand-built speakers that have defined Afro-Colombian and Caribbean rhythms since the 1950s.
To create this library, MNTRA Instruments recorded a diverse array of sources—including hollow-bodied wooden drums, marimbas, African percussion, modular synths, and vintage drum machines (808 and LinnDrum)—and re-amped them through actual Picó stacks in Barranquilla. The result is a physical, saturated, and distorted palette where sounds are sculpted by raw air and concrete walls, designed to cut through modern Latin rhythms, hip-hop, and experimental electronics.
